Revolutionary War: Thirteen Toasts

On June 21, 1775 the Council of Safety was organized in Tondee's Tavern and instructed to correspond with the other colonies. A liberty flag was hoisted to the top of the (liberty) pole in front of the tavern and that evening a celebration was had in the tavern. Thirteen toasts were drunk in an excess of patriotism and good fellowship. That was when the Savannah wives of patriots learned to expect tipsy husbands when they had their revolutionary meetings. Biographical Sketches of Georgia colonials is written by Jeannette Holland Austin in Colonial Georgians, found in the colonial section of Georgia Pioneers
