Factor's Walk

Factor's Walk, Savannah
If you were a planted during the 17th and 18th centuries, you needed someone to manage your imports and exports.  A factoring agent bargained for the best prices and shipped plantation goods abroad.  The Savannah River served as a busy port town. The planters in Savannah did well after 1752, when the Trustees surrendered the Charter to King George and they could bring slaves into the colony.  The industry and prosperity of the plantations is reflected in the first several books of wills and estates in the probate court where wills and inventories averaged 50 pages or more!  All of the old Chatham County Wills and Estates are available to members of Georgia Pioneers
